Do not use your real name to chat with anyone, do not use chat names that give any clue about who and where you are. Your online profile should not contain any relevant information about you. Keep your personal details secret; do not provide your financial or proprietary information online to any person in particular. Always protect yourself and maintain your secrecy, while at the same remaining anonymous. Take your time, there is no rush in getting hooked, the other person is not going anywhere, feel safe, getting on the phone is a good idea, use your mobile phone incase you have one or use a new number, incase if the time comes to cut ties all you would have to do is change numbers. Asking for references from the other person is also a good idea, ask about his work, his boss, his friends and family. Above all have some common sense; if meeting the person meet in a public place, be late for the first meeting and tell some one about where are you going and whom are you suppose to meet, even provide contact information.
